What white noise is
White noise has equal energy at every frequency people can hear. Because each slice of the spectrum is equally loud, and our ears are more sensitive to high frequencies, it sounds bright and hissy, like TV static or a running shower.
That evenness is what makes it a good mask. A dog barking, a door closing or a car passing is a sudden change against silence. Against a steady bed of white noise the same sound is a smaller jump, so it's less likely to pull you out of sleep.
White noise vs. pink and brown noise
Pink noise rolls off the highs so it sounds softer, closer to steady rain. Brown noise rolls off even more and sounds like a deep rumble or a distant waterfall. If white noise feels too sharp, try brown first; most people who find white noise harsh settle on brown.
Our white vs. pink vs. brown noise guide goes deeper on which color suits which sleeper.
How this player works
The sound is computed sample by sample while it plays, the same way the Sleepy Noise app does it. There's no audio file, so there's no seam where a recording starts over. Pick All night and it keeps going until you stop it, or pick a timer and it fades out gently.
One honest limit: phone browsers usually stop audio when the screen locks or you switch apps. If you want white noise all night on your phone with the screen off, use the app. It runs in the background, survives calls and alarms, and starts from a widget or the lock screen.
White noise for studying and focus
White noise is the strongest of the noise colors at covering voices, which makes it a good pick for a loud café, a shared room or an open office. Keep it low; at volume it can get tiring over a long session. More in our studying and focus guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is this white noise free?
Yes. The player on this page is free with no ads and no sign-up, and White Noise is one of the core sounds that stay free forever in the Sleepy Noise app.
Will it play for 10 hours?
In this tab it plays until you stop it or a timer ends, as long as the tab stays open and your device stays awake. On a phone with the screen off, use the Sleepy Noise app, which plays all night by default.
Does white noise loop?
Not here. It's generated live, so there is no recording to restart. Many 10-hour videos and playlists loop a short clip, which is where the faint repeat you sometimes notice comes from.
