What brown noise is
Brown noise (also called red or Brownian noise) puts most of its energy in the low frequencies. Its power falls by about 6 dB for every doubling of frequency, so the hiss of white noise drops away and what's left sounds like a low roar: heavy surf from inside a house, wind on a plane, or a waterfall in the next room.
The name comes from Brownian motion, the random drift of particles that the signal mimics, not from the color.
Why so many people prefer brown noise for sleep
Low sounds are easier to tune out than high ones, so brown noise can sit at a higher level without feeling sharp. It's also good at covering the low-frequency noises that white noise misses, like a neighbor's TV, traffic rumble or a partner's snoring.
If brown noise feels muddy, pink noise sits halfway between brown and white noise. The full comparison is in our noise colors guide.
Brown noise without YouTube ads
Most brown noise people find is a 10-hour video. Those can show ads mid-stream, stop when the screen locks unless you pay for Premium, and roll into the next video when they end. We wrote up what goes wrong with YouTube, Spotify and smart speakers overnight.
This player has none of that. For a phone on the nightstand, the Sleepy Noise app plays the same brown noise all night with the screen off, and its Deeper Nights pack (Lifetime) adds Deep Brown, an even lower rumble.
Brown noise for studying and focus
Brown noise is the most popular focus sound because it fades into the background for hours without hiss. Set a 30 or 60 minute timer as a focus block and let the fade-out be your break cue. See the studying and focus guide for how it compares with white and pink noise.
Frequently asked questions
Is brown noise better than white noise for sleep?
It depends on the sleeper. Brown noise sounds deeper and softer, so many people find it easier to listen to all night. White noise masks high-pitched sounds better. Try both at a low volume and keep the one you stop noticing.
Can I play brown noise all night?
In this browser tab it plays until you stop it, as long as the tab stays open. On a phone with the screen locked, the Sleepy Noise app keeps brown noise going all night and resumes after calls and alarms.
Is brown noise the same as red noise?
Yes. Brown, red and Brownian noise are names for the same thing: noise whose power drops 6 dB per octave.
