YouTube, Spotify or Alexa for white noise? What fails overnight

YouTube, Spotify and Alexa can all play white noise for free, and each works fine while you're awake. Overnight, each has a weak spot. YouTube runs mid-roll ads and needs Premium to keep playing with a phone screen off, Spotify's free tier plays ads and can autoplay into music, and some Alexa skills stop after an hour unless you ask them to loop.

None of these are bad services. They just weren't built for eight hours of uninterrupted sound in a dark room. Here's what to expect from each, fairly, and what to do about it.

Is YouTube good for white noise?

What YouTube does well

The selection is enormous. Search "brown noise YouTube" or "white noise 10 hours" and you'll get more options than you could try in a year, in every color of noise, fan, rain and dryer you can think of. It's free, it's already on every phone and TV, and it's a good way to find out what kind of sound you like before committing to anything.

Mid-roll ads in 10-hour videos

Since July 2020, YouTube has allowed mid-roll ads on monetized videos 8 minutes or longer, and they're turned on by default (Tubefilter covered the change). A 10-hour white noise video is far past that line. So unless you pay, you can get an ad partway through the night, and ads aren't made with a sleeping room in mind.

Screen-off playback needs Premium

On a phone, playing YouTube in the background with the screen off requires YouTube Premium, which also removes the ads. Premium is $15.99 a month in the US as of October 2026, after an April 2026 price increase. Without it, the screen has to stay on, which means a bright rectangle in a dark bedroom and a phone that's working harder all night.

Autoplay and loops

When a video ends, YouTube's autoplay can start the next one, and the next one might not be white noise. Turn autoplay off before bed. Also, not every "10 hours" video is 10 hours of fresh sound. Some are a short clip repeated, and once you notice the seam every few minutes, it's hard to stop hearing it.

Is Spotify good for white noise?

What Spotify does well

If you already use Spotify, there's nothing new to install. White noise, brown noise and rain playlists are easy to find, they play with the screen off, and Premium subscribers don't hear ads.

Ads on the free tier

On the free tier, ads interrupt sleep playlists. The problem is well-known enough that IKEA Canada and the agency Rethink made a set of deliberately quiet Spotify ads called "Won't Wake the Baby" in 2020, and the campaign won a Cannes Lion in 2021. An ad that wins awards for not waking people tells you what the usual ads do.

Gaps between tracks

Many white noise "albums" on Spotify are made of short tracks rather than one long one. Between tracks there can be a gap of silence. For a light sleeper or a baby, a steady sound that suddenly stops and starts again can be worse than no sound at all.

Autoplay into music

When a playlist or album ends, Spotify's autoplay can keep going with other music. People in the Spotify community have described exactly this. If you use Spotify for sleep, turn autoplay off in settings and put the playlist on repeat.

Does Alexa white noise stop after an hour?

Sometimes, depending on the skill. There isn't one answer for all of Alexa.

What Alexa does well

The built-in sounds are free, you can start them by voice without picking up a phone, and a smart speaker on a shelf keeps screens out of the bedroom. For a lot of families, that's the main appeal, and it's a fair one.

Skills behave differently

Some ambient sound skills play for 1 hour by default and need you to say "loop" or "keep going" to continue, while others loop until you stop them (Tom's Guide walks through several). Some skills also cost money; TMSOFT's White Noise skill is $1.99 a month as of October 2026, per its support page. If your Alexa sound keeps stopping, check how that specific skill handles looping.

Updates in the middle of the night

Firmware updates can interrupt Alexa sleep sounds overnight. And because skills play over your home internet, a router restart can end the night early too.

YouTube vs Spotify vs Alexa for white noise: comparison

YouTube (free) YouTube Premium Spotify (free) Alexa Sleepy Noise
Cost (as of Oct 2026) Free $15.99/mo (US) Free Built-in sounds free; some skills paid 12 core sounds free; $9.99 one-time Lifetime
Ads overnight Mid-rolls on by default for 8+ min videos No Yes Depends on the skill Never
Plays with phone screen off No Yes Yes No phone needed Yes
Can switch to other content Autoplay to next video Autoplay to next video Autoplay into music Varies by skill No
Can stop on its own When the video ends When the video ends Gaps between tracks; playlist ends Some skills stop after 1 hour Only if you set a timer
Needs internet Yes Not if downloaded Yes Yes No
Selection Huge Huge Large Varies by skill 12 free sounds plus paid packs

Every option on this list does something well. YouTube and Spotify win on selection by a mile. Alexa wins on not needing a phone in the room at all.

What a dedicated offline sleep app does differently

A sleep sound app that stores or generates its sounds on the phone avoids most of the problems above at once. There's no internet to drop, no ad slot to fill, no "next video" to autoplay into, and no reason for the sound to stop until you tell it to.

Sleepy Noise works this way. It plays all night by default, most of its sounds are generated live on the phone so there's no loop seam, and it never switches to other content. Calls, alarms and Siri pause it, and it fades back in afterward. If you want the longer list of what makes sound apps go quiet overnight, see why white noise apps stop in the middle of the night.

The tradeoff is real: a dedicated app has far fewer sounds than YouTube. If you love one specific recording of a specific train, YouTube will have it and we won't.

Want white noise with no ads while you're awake?

You can play brown noise, white noise and rain sounds right in your browser on this site, free and with no ads. They're good for working, reading, or a nap at your desk.

One honest catch: phone browsers usually stop audio when the screen locks, so the web players aren't a good choice for a full night on a phone. For overnight, use the app. If you're comparing ad-free options more broadly, we also put together a list of white noise apps without ads.

Where Sleepy Noise fits

Sleepy Noise is a white noise app for iPhone and Android, built for the overnight part. It plays all night with the screen locked, works offline, has no ads and no account, and doesn't collect data. The 12 core sounds (white, pink and brown noise, fan, rain, ocean, shush, heartbeat, womb, dryer, vacuum and car ride) are free forever. Sleepy Noise Lifetime is a one-time $9.99 for the extra sound packs and unlimited mixes, with no subscription.

What it isn't: a streaming library, a music service or a smart speaker skill. There's no meditation content and no sleep tracking. If you want thousands of choices, YouTube and Spotify are better for browsing. If you want a sound that's still going at 4 a.m., that's what we made. And if you're unsure whether to run it all night at all, read whether white noise should play all night.

Frequently asked questions

Does YouTube play ads during 10-hour white noise videos?

It can. Since July 2020, mid-roll ads are allowed and on by default for monetized videos 8 minutes or longer, so a 10-hour video can show ads partway through unless you have YouTube Premium.

Can I play YouTube white noise with the screen off?

On a phone, background playback with the screen off requires YouTube Premium, which is $15.99 a month in the US as of October 2026. Without it, the screen has to stay on.

Why does my Spotify white noise switch to music?

When a playlist or album ends, Spotify's autoplay can continue with other music. Turn autoplay off in settings and set the playlist to repeat.

Why does Alexa white noise stop after an hour?

Some Alexa ambient sound skills play for 1 hour by default and keep going only if you say "loop" or "keep going." Others loop until stopped, so it depends on the skill you're using.

Is there a white noise app with no ads?

Yes. Several apps have no ads, including myNoise and Sleepy Noise, and many others let you pay once to remove them.
