White noise apps with no ads and what to check first

As of October 2026, the white noise apps with no ads are mostly ones you pay for once, or ones that never ran ads in the first place. myNoise is free with no ads and no subscription, and Atmosphere removes its ads for a one-time $4.99. Before you pick, check the ads, the subscription terms, whether it plays all night, what it tracks and how loud it can go.

What should you check before you pick a white noise app?

Almost every sleep sound app sounds fine in a 30-second preview. The differences show up at 3 a.m., when the sound cuts out or a trial quietly turns into a charge.

Ads, and whether they touch the audio

A banner ad is mostly harmless if the phone is face down. The bigger problem is anything that interrupts the sound. TMSOFT's own release notes for White Noise Lite mention "fixes to certain ads disrupting audio," which tells you it can happen even in a well-made app. Ten-hour videos are worse: since July 2020, YouTube has allowed mid-roll ads on monetized videos 8 minutes or longer, on by default. We wrote more about that in YouTube, Spotify and Alexa for white noise.

Ask two questions: does the free version show ads, and does paying remove them?

Subscription or one-time purchase

This is where sleep apps differ most. BetterSleep's help center says it is "no longer a free app" since 2025, and its App Store listing shows a $69.99 subscription and a $99.99 lifetime option as of October 2026. Calm runs $14.99 to $16.99 a month or $69.99 to $79.99 a year, and its Trustpilot page sits at 1.4 out of 5 from 495 reviews, mostly about billing and cancellation.

On the other side, a white noise app with a one-time purchase still exists. The full White Noise app from TMSOFT is $0.99, myNoise Full Access is $19.99, and Baby Shusher is $1.99. Scroll the In-App Purchases list on any listing before you download. Monthly or yearly prices there mean a subscription is part of the plan.

Do the free sounds stay free?

A free tier only helps if the sounds you need are in it. App Store reviewers of Rain Rain say most options are premium. On JustUseApp, BetterSleep reviewers mention paywalled content they can't preview and paid content disappearing after updates. Those are individual reviews, not a verdict. If you know you want white, brown or rain, check that those specific sounds are free, not just that the app is.

Will it keep playing all night?

Sound stopping overnight is a common complaint, and several big apps are open about it. BetterSleep has a support page for audio stopping on Android that suggests turning off battery optimization and changing its "Loop correction mode." Calm has an article titled How to Fix Calm Audio Stopping or Pausing During a Session. TMSOFT's FAQ covers Bluetooth auto-connect, notifications, calls and Android battery settings killing playback. Atmosphere reviewers say it shuts off at random times or stops unless the phone is unlocked.

A support page is a good sign, honestly: the developer knows the problem and tells you what to do. Test any app yourself: start a sound, lock the phone, set an alarm for two minutes out and see if the sound comes back after. More on the causes in why your white noise app stops at night.

Loop seams and volume jumps

Recorded sounds loop, and a bad loop has a click, a gap or a swell you start to hear every few minutes. Playlists are worse: Spotify playlists of short noise tracks have gaps between tracks, and autoplay can roll into other music when the playlist ends. Rain Rain reviewers also mention volume changing on its own.

Play a sound for ten minutes with your eyes closed and listen for the restart. Then switch between two sounds and notice whether you reach for the volume.

Timers and one-tap start

Some people want a timer, some want sound until morning. Check that the app can do both, and that a timer fades out instead of cutting off. Rain Rain reviewers report timers running over, and Baby Shusher has no continuous mode. Also look for a widget, lock screen control or Siri shortcut, so starting the sound doesn't mean scrolling a bright screen while holding a baby.

A volume cap if it's for a baby

A 2014 study in Pediatrics tested 14 infant sleep machines at maximum volume. All 14 exceeded 50 dBA at 30 cm, and 3 exceeded 85 dBA at that distance (summary from CHOP). The authors recommended placing machines as far away as possible at low volume, and asked manufacturers to add output caps. That 50 dB figure is the hospital-nursery limit the study used, not an AAP guideline for sound machines.

Phones can't measure decibels without calibration, so any app's volume limit is guidance, not a guarantee. Our guide to how loud white noise should be for a baby goes further.

How do you read the App Store privacy label?

Every App Store listing has an App Privacy section further down the page. It sorts data into groups. The one to look for is Data Used to Track You, which means the app shares data with other companies to follow you across apps and websites, usually for ads. Below that are Data Linked to You and Data Not Linked to You. An app that collects nothing says Data Not Collected.

As of October 2026, BetterSleep and Calm list Purchases, Identifiers and Usage Data under tracking. White Noise Lite and Rain Rain list Identifiers, in Rain Rain's case for ads. That's normal for ad-supported apps, and still worth knowing before one spends eight hours a night on your nightstand.

Prices and labels below come from App Store listings and vendor pages as of October 2026. "Not checked" means we didn't verify it, so look at the listing yourself.

So which is the best white noise app?

It depends on what you want, and several of these are very good at their thing.

  • No ads, no subscription, lots of control: myNoise. It's the closest thing to how we think about this category, and it's free to start.
  • Cheap and proven: White Noise from TMSOFT. It has been the category leader for years, and the full app is $0.99.
  • A bigger library beyond noise: Calm or BetterSleep, if you're comfortable with a subscription.

If you're after brown noise with no ads or rain sounds for sleep with no ads, check that those exact sounds are in the free tier. You can also try our free brown noise and rain sounds players in the browser first. Phone browsers usually stop audio when the screen locks, though, so they're better for testing than for a full night.

What we built and why

We make Sleepy Noise, so read this with that in mind. We built it after too many nights up with a baby, scrolling past ads and trial screens to get to a fan sound.

  • No ads, ever. No account, no analytics. The App Store label says Data Not Collected, and it works offline.
  • 12 sounds free for good: White, Pink and Brown noise, Box Fan, Gentle Rain, Ocean Waves, Shush, Heartbeat, Womb, Dryer, Vacuum and Car Ride. Most are generated live on the phone, so there's no loop to hear. Ocean Waves is a recording that crossfades into a random point each pass.
  • Plays all night unless you set a timer, and timers fade out. Calls, alarms and Siri pause it, then it fades back in. It never auto-plays when the phone connects to a car or Bluetooth.
  • No volume jumps. Every sound is loudness-matched to −20 dBFS.
  • One tap to start from a Home or Lock Screen widget, Control Center, the Action Button or Siri. Android has a widget, a Quick Settings tile and an app shortcut.
  • Safer volume limit on by default, capping app volume at 60%, with a tip to keep the phone at least 2 m (about 7 ft) from the crib.
  • Lifetime is a one-time $9.99, with Family Sharing on iPhone. It adds every sound pack, including future ones.

What it doesn't do: no cry detection, no sleep tracking, no Apple Watch app, and no meditations or stories. If you want a bigger content library, Calm or BetterSleep is a better fit. If you want to fine-tune every frequency, try myNoise.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free white noise app with no ads?

Yes. As of October 2026, myNoise is free with no ads and no subscription, and Sleepy Noise has 12 free sounds with no ads. The free versions of White Noise Lite, Rain Rain and Atmosphere show ads.

Is there a white noise app without a subscription?

Several. White Noise from TMSOFT is $0.99, myNoise Full Access is $19.99, Baby Shusher is $1.99, Noisli on iOS is $1.99 and Sleepy Noise Lifetime is $9.99, all one-time as of October 2026.

How can I tell if a sleep sound app tracks me?

Open its App Store listing and scroll to App Privacy. Anything under "Data Used to Track You" is shared to follow you across other apps and sites. "Data Not Collected" means the app collects nothing.

Where can I get brown noise with no ads?

Sleepy Noise includes Brown noise free with no ads, and Deep Brown in its Lifetime pack. Whatever app you try, confirm brown noise is in the free tier before you download.

Why does my white noise app stop in the middle of the night?

Common causes are battery settings, a Bluetooth connection, a call or a notification interrupting audio. BetterSleep, Calm and TMSOFT all publish support pages for it, and a good app should resume on its own after an alarm or call.
